The Polish born director Roman Polanski, pictured here with his late actress wife Sharon Tate, had already acquired a reputation as an accomplished director in his native country before gaining notoriety in Hollywood with the intelligent psychological thriller Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Macbeth (1971). A turbulent life in the States, including the murder of his late wife Sharon Tate by the infamous Manson Gang in 1969 forced him to return to Europe. He returned to the big screen with the award winning 'Tess' (1979)and has continued to act in and direct a variety of European productions.
