COLON CANCER BLOOD SUPPLY, SEM
Colon cancer blood supply. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fractured plane through a blood vessel supplying a cancerous colon. Many red blood cells (erythrocytes) fill the blood vessel. Increased blood supply is often seen with cancer, as it is required for the rapid growth of the malignant cells that form a cancer. Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in the developed world. Symptoms include blood in the faeces, constipation or diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. Treatment often involves surgery and chemotherapy. Magnification unknown. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/STEVE GSCHMEISSNER)
