SWOLLEN FALLOPIAN TUBE
Swollen Fallopian tube. Endoscope view of a fluid- filled Fallopian tube (oviduct, lower centre to upper left), a condition known as a hydrosalpinx. An ovary (white) is at upper centre. The uterus is at centre right. The swelling may result from a blockage of the open (ovarian) end of the tube, or as a complication of an ovarian cyst. Surgery may be required to drain and repair the tube. The two Fallopian tubes (only one seen) lead from the uterus to the vicinity of the two ovaries. The tubes play a vital in reproduction. One of the ovaries will release an egg (ovum, female reproductive cell) that will travel to the uterus through the adjacent Fallopian tube. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/CNRI)
