USA EISERNE LUNGE
This is a scene in the emergency polio ward at Haynes Memorial Hospital in Boston, Ma. on Aug. 16, 1955, showing critical victims lined up in "iron-lung" respirators. Americans celebrated the 50th anniversary on Monday, April 26, 2004, of a victory over polio, which in the first half of the 20th century, killed and paralyzed thousands and mysteriously vacated grammar school desks. Children and parents were horrified by the prospect of life in an "iron lung," a metal coffin-like ventilator where victims with collapsed respiratory systems lived, sometimes indefinitely.
