USA FILM BUDD SCHULBERG
In this May 23, 1951 file picture, Author Budd Schulberg tells the House Un-American Committee in Washington, D.C. that he "drifted" into the Communist Party in the late 1930's but broke with it completely because the party tried to tell him how and what to write. Schulberg was a voluntary witness before the Congressional group which is investigating Communist influence in the movie industry. The son of a studio boss who defined the Hollywood hustle with his novel "What Makes Sammy Run?" and later proved himself a player with his Oscar-winning screenplay for "On the Waterfront".
