A MILLION SHILLINGS
HAZYEZ, YEMEN- MAY 2008.Having fled Mogadishu at the outbreak of civil war in 1991, Hawa holds up a portrait that she had taken on the day she arrived in Yemen. Looking decades younger and wearing her gold wedding jewellery, the day after she posed for the photograph, Hawa and her husband were forced to sell everything they had brought with them on their journey by ship. Settling in Yemen's first refugee camp for Somalis at Al-Sha'b, Hawa has spent the last seventeen years living in utter poverty. Following the premature death of her husband, she now lives with her two daughters on the outskirts of Sana'a. The picture is all she has left to remind her of the fleeting dreams she once had.
