A view taken from a hill on the U.S. side looking South towards Nogales, Mexico. The border has become increasingly militarized and built-up since 1994. As a result of this build-up the majority of illegal border crossers have been forced to attempt crossings in more remote and dangerous areas. A higher number of deaths has resulted. ..During the past decade, millions of Mexican and Central American migrants have left their homes and families, faced death on the journey to the United States and lived under the specter of criminality once in this country. Despite these obstacles, these resilient immigrants are transforming American culture and posing fundamental questions of justice, citizenship, and labor to the country. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/jon lowenstein)
