China reported a new outbreak of bird flu in the south-central province of Sichuan, according to a statement on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture 03 January 2006. About 1,800 farm birds died December 22 in a village in Dazhu County in Sichuan. The infection was confirmed by the National Avian Flu Reference Laboratory of China as having been caused by the H5N1 strain of bird flu. Local government workers culled 12,900 birds within a 3-kilometer (1.9-mile) radius of the infection site as of December 27. EPA/CQWB
