Metastatic cancer is that which has spread from a primary cancer elsewhere in the body. At lower centre is a bone of the vertebra (white). The liver is the large mass (pink) occupying much of the abdomen; dark red patches on the liver are cancerous tumours. Liver cancer may be primary (originating in the liver itself) or spread secondarily, as here. Metastatic cancer is the more common type, often associated with cancer of the stomach or intestine."
