A MILLION SHILLINGS
SHIMBIRO, SOMALIA- NOVEMBER 2007.As smugglers run back and forth through the water making last minute preparations, a crew member from a boat moored off the coast at Shimbiro, returns to shore with a hammer after carrying out repairs to the floating vessel now packed with it's human cargo. Many of the tiny fishing boats used by the smuggling networks are unreliable; as engines fail and the unstable vessels take on water, they frequently run into difficulties on the high seas. For the migrants and refugees tied up on board, it is just one of the many risks that makes the crossing ahead such a dangerous gamble. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Alixandra Fazzina)
