Safe Zone by Jacob Zocherman (KONTINENT)
Crime rates in Johannesburg are on their way down and the former "murder capital of the world" is now a safer city. In just five years, the number of violent assaults, robbery and sexual crimes has been slashed by 35 per cent, while carjackings are down by a third. But safety comes at a price. South Africa's security industry is the largest in the world, worth Euros 4.5 billion a year. There are more than 400 000 heavily armed security guards patrolling the streets, outnumbering the number of police in most areas. Meanwhile, residents in less affluent areas take the law into their own hands. Victims of mob justice wash up every day at Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, where staff sees more trauma injuries than anywhere else in the world. Confidence in the law enforcement is low, says Nardus Hollander who left his job to become the self-appointed sheriff of Alberton, south Johannesburg, three years ago, and adds: "In this country it's quicker to get a pizza delivery than a police patrol."
