CHINA PHOTO SET HANFU ENTHUSIASTS
epa08669970 A woman wearing hanfu, traditional Chinese clothing, dances while posing for photographs in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China, 19 August 2020, 19 August 2020 (issued 15 September 2020). Hanfu is an umbrella term for a wide range of traditional or traditionally inspired Chinese clothing dating from the reign of the Yellow Emperor (2698-2598 B.C.) to the Mid-17th century (late Ming dynasty and early Qing dynasty). The making of Hanfu requires intricate craftsmanships such as dyeing, weaving, and embroidery involving more than 30 Chinese intangible cultural heritage skills. In 2003, an electrician named Wang Letian from Zhengzhou, Henan province became the first person to wear Hanfu in public after walking on the streets in his own handmade Hanfu to promote his Taobao Hanfu online store. The walk was widely reported by the media and Wang became known as a pioneer of the Hanfu movement, sparking many followers to join the movement to revitalize the traditional Chinese costume, especially that of the Han ethnic group. In the following years, Hanfu enthusiasts have grown in numbers and gradually became a lifestyle pursued by Chinese young people, not limited to a minority subculture. They use social media networks like Baidu post bar, Wechat, Bilibili video-sharing website, Douyin app, and Zhihu, a Chinese question-and-answer website to communicate and discuss among themselves.
