HIGH-SPEED PHOTO OF A TROTTING HORSE PULLING CART
Cart horse. High-speed photograph of the silhouette of a trotting horse (^IEquus caballus^i) pulling a cart. This image was taken by the British-American photographer Eadweard James Muybridge (1830-1904). Muybridge pioneered the use of high-speed photography and employed ingenious techniques to analyse animal and human locomotion. He began his work on high-speed photography when he was commissioned to find out if a galloping horse has all its feet off the ground at certain times. The horse seen here, called Occident, was the one he was asked to photograph. He proved that it did (as here) take all its feet off the ground.
