FOOTPRINT LIFTING
MODEL RELEASED. Footprint lifting. Scene of crime officer (SOCO) lifting a footprint at a crime scene using electrostatic lifting apparatus (ESLA). This technique is used to recover footwear marks in dry conditions. The apparatus consists of a sheet of metallised film that is placed over the print using a roller (right). A high static charge is then applied to the film, which causes the dust particles in the print to become attracted to the film. Because the film is black on one side, the print can clearly be seen when lit. It is then photographed and the image used to match the print against a suspect's shoe.
