Heart. Historical illustration of the anatomy of the heart. At top, the outer membrane of the heart (the pericardium, white) is drawn aside by hooks. The heart is seen from front (lower left) with coronary blood vessels (red and blue) covering its surface. The aorta (yellow) is the major artery leaving the heart. It carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Underneath the arch of the aorta is the pulmonary artery (blue) that carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs. In the rear view of the heart (lower right), the pulmonary veins (red) bring oxygenated blood back from the lungs. Colour lithograph by Fairland from The Viscera of the Human Body, 1840. Based on drawings by Bagg. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/SHEILA TERRY)
