Aviator Amelia Earhart stands next to a Lockheed Electra 10E, before her last flight in 1937 from Oakland, Calif., bound for Honolulu on the first leg of her record-setting attempt to circumnavigate the world westward along the Equator. The Los Angeles Times reported in their Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 edition that bones found on a Polynesian island may offer some insight into the mysterious disappearance of Earhart. Two forensic anthropologists who studied the records said precise dimensions of the bones indicate the skeleton was that of a white female of northern European extraction, about 5 feet 7 inches tall. The findings will be presented on Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 at a meeting of the American Anthropological Association in Philadelphia. (AP Photo)
