PICCARD TIEFSEETAUCHEN TRIESTE
Piccard and Walsh's record dive, 1960. Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard (centre, 1922-2008) and US oceanographer Don Walsh (born 1931) in Trieste, a deep-sea submersible that they used to descend to the deepest known part of the Earth's oceans. This is a point known as Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench near Guam in the Pacific Ocean. The record depth is around 10,900 metres below sea level and was reached on 23 January 1960. Trieste, a type of submersible known as a bathyscape, was designed by Jacques' father, the Swiss physicist Auguste Piccard. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/NOAA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
