Making a film out of Joyce's Ulysses ..Forty - four years after its first publication James Joyce ' s Ulysses is being filmed . Considering the importance of the work and the cinematic challenge it presents , it seems surprising that it has not been brought to the screen before now . In fact the idea had been discussed several times in the past - Eisenstein talked over the possibilities with Joyce in the twenties , and Warner Brothers once considered casting Charles Laughton as Leopold Bloom . Nothing materialized in either case , but now the American producer - director , Joseph Strick is two thirds of the way through a film version that he is shooting on location in Dublin with a cast headed by Barbara Jefford and Milo O ' Shea ..Photo shows ; Molly Bloom ( Barbara Jefford ) and Leopold Bloom ( Milo O ' Shea ) in bed at the end of the day - surrounded by camera crew and director ..27 August 1966 (KEYSTONE/United Archives / TopFoto/)
