"Dr Heinrich Schliemann. Historical illustration of the German archaeologist Dr Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890), shown addressing a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries in 1877. Schliemann had earlier discovered the ancient city of Troy. He left education at the age of 14 and made his fortune in business. At 46 he retired and began researching Homer's account of the Trojan war in the Iliad. In 1870 he discovered the ruins of Troy at Hissarlik in Turkey. The Society seen here was founded in 1572 and frequented by \persons curious in their researches in antiquity\"". Meetings were held weekly and featured guest speakers and discussions."""
