A Japanese commander bows low as he surrenders his sword in Saigon, South Vietnam, Dec. 13, 1945. Brought down to Saigon from the northern province of French Indochina, about 50 members of the Japanese Kempeitai (secret police) surrendered their swords. Britain's Major General D.D. Gracey, Cheif of the Allied Control Commission in French Indochina, was present at the ceremony, but he gave India's Subedar Major Ahmed Khan Sarda Bahadur the pleasure of receiving the weapons of the representatives of a race that once boasted that it would conquer India. British Commonwealth troops will begin withdrawing from French Indochina as the French move in. One brigade group may leave before the end of the year. (AP Photo/British Official Photo)
