INDOCHINA. Gian Coc. French soldiers. Between 1945 and 1954 the French, who before the war had established a protectorate in Indochina, fought against the Vietnamese Nationalists, led by Ho Chi MINH, who reclaimed independance. The first Indochina War ended in the Vietnamese victory at Dien Bien Phu on May 7, 1954, after which Vietnam was divided between a Northern part (led by Ho Chi MINH) and and a Southern part (led by the French). 1952.
