Andrei Sakharov. Historical portrait of Russian physicist Andrei Sakharov (1921-89), around 1950. As a postgraduate, Sakharov studied nuclear fusion under Nobel laureate Igor Tamm in Moscow, Russia. They worked together again whilst developing the first Soviet hydrogen bomb, successfully tested in August 1953. However, his concerns with the safety of nuclear tests led him to campaign for a nuclear test-ban and improved civil rights. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975. In 1980, he was sent into internal exile, not to be released until 1986. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/VNIIEF MUSEUM AND ARCHIVE/AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
