PROFESSOR BARRY BLUMBERG
Professor Baruch 'Barry' Blumberg (b.1925), US physiologist and Nobel Laureate. After service in the US Navy in World War 2, Blumberg studied physics at Union College. He then changed to medicine, gaining his MD from Columbia in 1951 and his PhD from Balliol, Oxford, in 1957. Most of his research has been in virology, particularly the mechanisms by which blood-bourne viruses (such as hepatitis B) originate and are transmitted. This work led to his sharing the 1976 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Since 1989, Blumberg has been Master of Balliol College, Oxford. Photographed in 1994.
