PHILIPPINEN AUSBRUCH VULKAN PINATUBO 1991
Ash plume from Mount Pinatubo. False-colour satellite image of a cloud of volcanic ash from Mt Pinatubo, Philippines. The green area at bottom is the island of Luzon where Mt Pinatubo is located. Yellow areas denote normal clouds. The image was made on 11 June 1991. Mt Pinatubo ejected increasing amounts of ash over the following few days, culminating in a major explosive eruption on 15-16 June, 1991. Ash and gas from the eruption entered the stratosphere, eventually encircling the globe. The data for this image were gathered by the AVHRR radiometer on the NOAA-11 polar- orbiting satellite. North is to the right. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/ROBERT M CAREY, NOAA)
