WELTRAUM RAUMSTATION MIR
The Russian space station Mir, shown in this photo brought back from the U.S. Space Shuttle Atlantis and released April 3, 1996, is seen as it flies over the 'limb' of the Earth as Atlantis approached for docking March 23, 1996. Mir survived fires, collisions, equipment failure, even the collapse of the government that launched it. But in the end, politics and pragmatism brought the 135-ton spacecraft down. During 15 years in orbit, the Russian space station showed that people could spend months, even years, living in space. (KEYSTONE/AP Photo/NASA/Str)
