ITALIEN ALESSANDRO VOLTA
Alessandro Volta (1745-1827). 1864 illustration of the Italian physicist and chemist Alessandro Volta. Volta is best known for inventing the electric battery in 1800. His battery consisted of alternating disks of silver and zinc with brine-soaked card between them. The International Standard (SI) unit of electrical potential difference, the volt, is named after him. Awarded the French Legion of Honour in 1805, he was made Count of the Kingdom of Italy by Napoleon in 1810. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/COLLECTION ABECASIS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
