Victims lie dead and severely wounded at the site of a bomb blast in an area of small businesses and a hospital in central Kabul today. The bomb is believed to have been carried by an ambulance, the driver of which was able to penetrate at least one layer of security on a well-guarded road home to the European Union delegation, the Swedish and Dutch Embassies as well as the former Interior Ministry building. It is unclear as to the target of the attack, which was claimed by the Taliban, but victims appeared to be mostly civilians, many of whom were at the entrance to Chicken Street, a narrow road of carpet and jewellery shops popular with foreign visitors. The Ministry of Public Health, as at 6:30PM local time reports 95 dead and 158 wounded, however, the number of dead is expected to rise as those with severe injures succumb to their wounds and as others are found in the wreckage at the site.
