January 20, 2017.Dead trees in flooded forestlands from dam construction on the Rio Araguari, approximately 50 miles north of Macapa, Amapà¡ state, Brazil. One large dam has been built in Amapà¡ state, destroying hundreds of square kilometres of rainforest, and many more small- and medium-sized dams are planned. While the energy generated from these hydropower projects goes to the grid and rural people in the state that have little to no electricity, the dams actually contribute a large amount of CO2 emissions from their construction and the yearly flooding during wet season, which creates methane as vegetation is drowned by the rising waters.
