INDIEN MAHATMA GANDHI
Indian political and spiritual leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi pictured with his wife, Kasturba, in 1915 on his return to India after living in South Africa. After returning, Gandhi supported the British in World War I in the hope of hastening India's freedom, and was given the title Mahatma (great soul), which reflected personal prestige so high that he was able to unify the Indian National Congress. Gandhi was fatally shot in 1948 by a Hindu fanatic. (KEYSTONE/CAMERA PRESS/G/S)
