INDOCHINAKRIEG OPERATION BOLERO II 1952
French soldiers, waist-deep in water, fight the mud and canal current from carrying away their boat, in the hard to reach district of rice paddies southwest of Hai Duong, Indochina, July 17, 1952. The soldiers are participating in "Operation Bolero II," which is a series of "pacification" operations intended to reinstall the local Vietnamese administrations in the isolated districts that were formerly used as hideouts by the Viet Minh. The canals are swollen due to the beginning of the rainy season. (KEYSTONE/AP Photo)
