United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Japan 03 August 2010 to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two cities where the US military dropped atomic bombs 65 years ago. Ban will be the first UN secretary general to attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony in Hiroshima. For the first time the United States will send an envoy to the memorial. The US bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 06 August 1945, killing tens of thousands of people in seconds. By the end of the year, 140,000 had died from the effects of the bomb.
