** HOLD FOR RELEASE UNTIL 4 PM EDT SATURDAY JULY 23 2005 ** A few steel and concrete buildings and bridges are still intact in Hiroshima after the Japanese city was hit by an atomic bomb by the U.S., during World War II Sept. 5, 1945. According to AP-Kyodo polling 60 years after World War II ended, Americans are far more likely than the Japanese to expect another world war in their lifetimes. The war claimed almost 300,000 United States troops on battlefields around the world and more than four times that many Japanese troops overall and more than 300,000 Japanese civilians. Most people in both countries believe the use of a nuclear weapon first is never justified. Two-thirds of Americans say the dropping of the bombs was unavoidable, while only 20 percent of Japanese felt that way and three-fourths said it wasn't necessary.
