Palmyra (Tadmor), Syria. A World Heritage site. City already mentioned in documents from the 2nd millenium BC. Grew rich from the caravan trade. Made history as the capital of the rebellious Queen Zenobia who was quickly subdued by the Romans. Visible ruins mostly from Roman times, the very first centuries AD. Foreground: Baal temple.
