The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector can be thought of as a complex 3D camera taking up to 40 million pictures of particle collisions each second. Millions of channels read out signals from the detector's components and transfer them to computing facilities for analysis, pictured at CERN in Cessy, France, near Geneva, Switzerland, on June 11, 2014. At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers from all over the world research the fundamental structure of the universe relying on, amongst other things, the largest particle physics laboratory.
