The ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) detector. The red octagonal structure is a big solenoidal magnet, which separates the charged particles produced from the proton or lead ion collisions. Most of the ALICE detectors are installed inside this magnet, pictured at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, on June 10, 2014. At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers from all over the world research the fundamental structure of the universe relying on, amongst other things, the largest particle physics laboratory.
