Archive image of author Doris Lessing, who has led something of a colourful life, much of which is depicted in many of her novels. Doris May Lessing was born in 1919 in Persia, and is known for books such as 'The Grass is Singing'(1950), 'The Four Gated City' (1969), the autobiographical 'Going Home' (1957) and 'The Sweetest Dream'. She became politically involved when she left her homeland in the former Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, to live in England. Doris has also written a number of experimental novels and science fiction. She has won several prizes, including the Somerset Maugham Award in 1956 and W.H. Smith Award in 1986. In 2001, Lessing was awarded the 'Prince of Asturias Prize in Literature', one of Spain's most important distinctions, for her brilliant literary works in defence of freedom and Third World causes.
