Um die Ernte auf Tag und Stunde genau vorauszuplanen, werden die Pflanzen mit Äthylen begast, das die Wachstumsphase beendet und die Fruchtbildung einleitet. - So war das jedenfalls einmal. James Dole hatte die kleinste der hawaiianischen Inseln 1922 gekauft und zur 'Ananasinsel' gemacht. Zuzeiten kamen drei Viertel aller Ananas weltweit von Lanai.
