- The Star of Montady, Département Hérault, France 1972 - These star-shaped field plots were created after 1247. The Etang de Montady, a Mediterranean lagoon or swamp, was drained for agricultural use. The rays of the star were draining ditches through which the water flowed down to a central point and from there through a partly underground culvert into a neighbouring shallow lake. The administrative body for this melioration star still exists today; the "Syndicat Agricole" of Montady is one of the oldest in France. However, the Etang has long since dried out and instead of being for drainage, the radial ditches are used today more for irrigation; the water is drawn from the Canal du Midi. All the wedge-shaped plots have the same area. Vines, cereals, tomatoes and alfalfa are grown on these radial fields, covering more than 500 hectares.
