- Lentils prior to harvest in Whitman County, Washington, USA 1988 - Close to the drop into the Snake River canyon a farmer lays his lentils in windrows in preparation for the actual harvest. Laid out like this, the lentils are better aired and dried when taken up by the combine. The fact that the farmer works from the centre outwards is not a mere whim, but makes sound economic sense; in such a huge field, this interplay of combine and transport trucks reduces the amount of driving that needs to be done. Whitman County is proud of its record-breaking agricultural efficiency. Apart from wheat, it produces more lentils, dried peas and barley than any other county in the United States. And as for open-air picture galleries, it would be difficult to find a similar one in the whole country - exhibiting agro-art that is as unintentional as it is amazing.
