BOSASSO, SOMALIA- JANUARY 2007.Sitting in her makeshift tent in the dusty Bulo Elay Camp, thirty-two year old Hakumo Abdulahi looks down at her sick three month old son Ahmed in despair. Severely malnourished and suffering from a bout of bad diarrhea from drinking the unprotected local water, Ahmed has made little in the way of recovery. Despite Hakumo seeking assistance from a clinic run by the World Food Programme, she is worried that he won't pull through.Escaping from Mogadishu a year ago with just the clothes on her back, Hakumo left her other children behind with a relative in order to follow her husband to Bossaso by truck; she discovered she was pregnant soon after. Originally planning to escape Somalia for the shores of Yemen, the family have now been forced to eke out a life in the camps of Bossaso, unable to return home or to continue their journey. Hakumo has no word as to whether her other children are alive or dead. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Alixandra Fazzina)
