LUHIBILA, YEMEN- MAY 2007.As the waters recede on the twenty-kilometre stretch of beach that runs either side of Luhibila, bodies buried by the tide are revealed under the sands.Testimonies from surviving migrants and refugees that arrived in the same group, tell of leaving Somalia in a group of three tiny fishing boats. Carrying over one hundred and twenty passengers each, one has been missing at sea for the last three days. Little hope can be held out now for survivors. Ten further corpses of young men and women were discovered later that evening washed up along the same stretch of coast. As the stiff bodies lay in a row with their open eyes turned to the sky, local fishermen covered their faces with the victim's own veils and macawiis as a mark of respect. Three dead Ethiopian women were left untouched. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Alixandra Fazzina)
