Public Housing in Limerick, Ireland by Rian Dundon
In 2007, the 4 largest public housing estates of Limerick City, Ireland, were set to undergo a massive urban renewal plan. The plan, dubbed The Limerick Regeneration Project, would replace existing council housing with newly designed and better equipped facilities in the Moyross, Ballinacurra Weston, Southill and St. Mary's Park sections of the city. Two years later, in 2009, houses were being demolished at a rapid rate with almost no new development taking place. Tenants were faced with a choice: leave, or stay to watch their neighborhoods crumble. Some speculated that the regeneration plan was merely a land grabbing scheme aimed to depopulate valuable city real estate ahead of commercial development. Now, 5 years and million of Euros later, little has changed in the affected communities and the Limerick Regeneration Project is defunct, having accomplished few of its ambitious goals. - Rian Dundon, October 2014
