Mourning Gaza by Benedicte Kurzen | NOOR
Mourning Gaza, 2004 - Here, on the Egyptian border, in the southern Gaza Strip, Israeli bulldozers flatten landscape and homes on a daily basis. Children smiles are gone, men have no work, and women struggle through their daily routine, strangled by the pain, suffocated by fear. Merwat, Magda, Kefah, Ferial, Alima and so many more ... They are Shaids' widows, sisters and mothers. - They mourn, destroyed, under constant threat and pressure not only from the Israeli army but also from the growing radicalization of the Islamic society they live in, forcing them to mourn for four month without leaving their homes, and wear the veil, that hides them. Their world is loaded with fences, barricades and obstacles. From the place where they live to the way they dress, they are women from within, not to be seen. - Their cases are not unique, it is sadly shared by hundreds of families who lost one of their dear ones. 624 children and 233 women died in the conflict between the beginning of the Second Intifada and March 2004. Most of them are victims of illegal homicides due to unconsidered shootings, shelling and targeting of civil areas, according to Amnesty International. (noor)
