The former Reich Chancellor Franz von Papen testifies as a witness during the Nuremberg Trials at the court in Nuremberg, Germany, June 1946. In 1932, Franz von Papen had been appointed as Reich Chancellor. With Hitler's rise to power, Papen became Vice Chancellor and later served as Ambassador in Vienna. He was acquitted by the Tribunal. Von Papen was born on October 29, 1879 in Werl, Germany, and died on May 2, 1969 in Obersasbach near Aachen, Germany. At the end of World War II, the International Military Tribunal was established by the USA, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union to indict and try former Nazi Party leaders as war criminals.
