Nippon Symphony (movement two) by Gildas de La Monneraye
Fin de travail: le tumulte de la cité, le silence des âmes. Julien Vocance (French poet 1878-1954) "The documentary journey of Gildas de La Monneraye in Japan was a long one, and moreover he crossed the country on foot from Chiba Prefecture to Ishikawa Prefecture, taking care not to miss the slightest detail. (...) In the simplest way possible, he managed to capture with his two hands the very moments of everyday life, an everyday life reproduced without the slightest flaw... In his shots, the will to be as absent as the air, this determination to erase from the photograph the sensation that the photographer exists, seems to us to be an essential motivation. As a result of this motivation, Gildas de La Monneraye's photographic universe is nothing more than the everyday of everyday life, so much so that we wonder if he hasn't taken away the very value of looking... And in the images that this universe reproduces, we find Japanese people surrounded by a kind of sorrow, a sadness that would normally go unnoticed. The sadness of everyday life is suspended in these images, where each day passes sadly by without leaving the slightest possible choice, touching our hearts with the beauty of impermanence..."
