"The Pig is the King animal in Wallis and Futuna, a French archipelago in the South Pacific. The pig is an offering, a currency of exchange, wealth! It occupies an important place in all socio-religious events. - customary... and within living memory, this animal has always been part of the life of Wallisians and Futunians" reports NC 1ère, local tv channel. In New Caledonia, this community is the largest from the Pacific Islands. The Futunians are very attached to traditions and celebrate important events among themselves which give them the opportunity to get together. The emigration of Wallisians and Futunians is very high, often for economic reasons. The families exiled from the small island of Futuna, split into two kingdoms, are very close and the slightest opportunity gives rise to reunions during grandiose, colorful festivities, where the pig is the centerpiece. Tradition has it that it is the men who take care of the traditional oven for cooking the pig in a very orchestrated organization.
