FIREFLIES
©National Pictures/NATIONAL PICTURES/MAXPPP - ; Great Britain - National News and Pictures..Pictured: Spencer Black..Like eerie green streaks in the forest, these incredible pictures show the trails left by fireflies as they flit round the woods at night looking for a mate.....The photos were taken with hours of exposure time to properly capture all the light left by these insects.....One shot shows the Blue Ghost fireflies in Brevard, North Carolina, taken over a four hour exposure.....The other two pictures show the Synchronous Firefly on a two hour exposure as they fly around the woods in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee.....These displays are so popular that they have up to 1,000 visitors a night to the park, with up to a four hour wait to be taken to the site where the fireflies are displaying.....Photographer Spencer Black, 27, from Asheville, North Carolina says the flight of the fireflies is an amazing thing to capture in an image.....He said: "I'm compelled towards long exposure and night photography because as much as you can pre-visualise what a scene may look like over a period of time you never really know what is going happen until the exposure has finished. ...."When I first started in photography I went camping where there was a forest fire off on the horizon, at night I took a 30 second exposure and during that time lightning struck the fire. ...."My tripod sank during the exposure and the quality suffered but after seeing what came out I was in love with the technique....."That element of surprise paired with having the ability to manipulate time has always pressed me to keep experimenting and the possibilities are endless."....*** FRANCE, BELGIUM and SWITZERLAND ONLY *** (KEYSTONE/MAXPPP/National Pictures )
