"Family Album" by Paco Chuquiure (Majority World)
"Oasis" is a piece of land taken illegally by 1,200 families on the outskirts of the city of Lima in Peru. Their residents struggle everyday with extreme poverty and are under the menace of being thrown away by the legal owners of the land and local authorities. All of them are underpaid, all of them don_t have social security and all of their homes have no water and electricity. Nevertheless, its residents show the strength and union of their community by celebrating local festivities. They celebrate with equal intensity the birth of a new child and the anniversary of the invasion of the land; mother's day and the remembrance of a local leader, assassinated in a fight; Independence Day and a wedding. In the state of Lima (Peru) almost 42% of the families live in high or deep poverty. The increasing number of the population and economic exclusion are the main reasons for the invasion of private lands. The invaders fight for a land in order to be recognized as citizens with equal rights.
