Nollywood by Casper Hedberg (KONTINENT)
In May, UNESCO ranked the Nigerian film industry Nollywood as the second largest in the world, making almost twice as many movies per year as Hollywood. Through low-budget, one-week productions made directly for the VHS and VCD-market, Nollywood took Africa with storm. After two rough years fighting piracy and declining movie quality, optimism is once again thriving in Lagos. In our reportage we get to know some of Nollywood´s major players. Don Pedro Obaseki, who believes that Nollywood had to crash to find it's real qualities, and now is becoming the first director to premier a movie at a major European film festival. And Kene Mkparu, who left his post as general manager at Odeon Cinemas in London to start building cinemas all over Nigeria, a country that for the moment only holds three. - I know the big bucks will come as soon when there are cinemas in Nigeria, Kene says. And then, in five years, Nollywood movies will be nominated to some of the big international awards. That is the spirit of this entrepreneurial heaven in West Africa which soon might be coming to a cinema near you.
