Federal Constitution 1848
On September 12, 1848, the Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation was adopted "with the intention of fortifying the Confederation of the Confederates and of preserving and promoting the unity, strength and honor of the Swiss nation." Thus, modern Switzerland as a federal state became a democratic republican island in the midst of the monarchies of Europe.
